VOLUNTEERING WITH HABITAT
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary this year, we are rolling out new volunteering and community engagement initiatives. To accommodate this transition, we are currently not scheduling large groups. However, save the date for our special events in 2023 — volunteers and sponsors needed!
- 40th Anniversary Celebration: Thursday, September 21 @ the Douglass Community Association
- Veterans Build: Saturday, November 11 (Veterans Day)
Support our work building affordable homes and give your business, group, or team some extra visibility by sponsoring one or more of our 2023 events. Each level comes with recognition in our digital and print media. We are happy to discuss customized sponsorship and recognition opportunities to meet your individual needs.
- $25,000 Presenting Sponsor (40th Anniversary Celebration only)
- $10,000 Community Builder
- $5,000 Neighborhood Builder
- $2,500 Home Builder
- $1,000 Good Neighbor
- $500 Individual
If you are an organization or company that is interested learning more about these upcoming events, our Sponsor-A-Day volunteer program, or other engagement opportunities with Habitat, please contact Rachel McCartney, Outreach Manager, at (269) 344-2443 x204 or rmccartney@habitatkalamazoo.org.
We are not able to accommodate court-ordered community service volunteers at this time.
When can I volunteer in construction?
Our teams build and repair homes every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and other special events throughout the year.
What is the age requirement to volunteer on the job site?
Everyone on the jobsite must be at least 16 years of age. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
What should I bring with me to volunteer?
All necessary tools will be provided on the job site. Water is provided on-site, but we encourage you to help us stay “green” and conserve cups by bringing a reusable water bottle.
What should I wear?
Whether the task is painting, landscaping or framing, your clothes and shoes WILL get dirty, so please dress accordingly. Wear layers and dress for the weather. You MUST wear closed-toe shoes. Sunscreen and a hat are also recommended.
Do I need to have prior construction experience?
No! Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome. No experience required. We have skilled staff and volunteer leaders on site to explain and supervise each task. If you are not comfortable with a task, you can simply ask to do something else.
What do volunteers do on site?
Volunteers perform a huge range of tasks, depending on the stage of construction. On the day you volunteer you could be assisting with framing, porch building, installing windows, insulating, painting, siding, landscaping, site cleanup or anything else that helps get the house built and ready for occupancy.
Can I volunteer at the ReStore?
Yes! Volunteers keep our ReStore humming. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older.
What will I do at the ReStore?
Habitat ReStore volunteers can help with the following:
- Organizing
- Light cleaning
- Loading and unloading trucks with donated items
- Customer service
